This week is the United States release of Thor Ragnarok! The third in the series of Thor films, is this one a foreboding of things to come? Ragnarok is the end of the world in Norse Mythology, it’s the doom of the Gods and mankind. It will be the final battle of the Gods vs the giants. Will the Thor Ragnarok movie turn out the same? There are spoilers included in this review so be aware.
Thor Ragnarok is a 2017 American superhero film based on the Marvel Comics character Thor, produced by Marvel Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. It is the sequel to 2011’s Thor and 2013’s Thor: The Dark World and the seventeenth film of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). The film is directed by Taika Waititi with a screenplay by Eric Pearson and the writing team of Craig Kyle and Christopher Yost, and stars Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, Cate Blanchett, Idris Elba, Jeff Goldblum, Tessa Thompson, Karl Urban, Mark Ruffalo and Anthony Hopkins. In Thor: Ragnarok, Thor must escape the alien planet Sakaar in time to save Asgard from Hela and the impending Ragnarök.
This is a different movie in tone as compared to other Thor movies. That is due to the new director, Taika Waititi, taking on the script. Thor Ragnarok has a lot more comedy than in previous Thor movies (which while they were good, they were not the best Marvel has to offer). In this movie, you right away see that this has a more comedic tone. The movie has a lighter feel to it. Now I’m sure people will very much like this movie. The movie has so much to like. However, it might have gone too far with the comedy. This is Thor not Spider-Man who is known for his quips. There is so much comedy in this movie, I wonder if this movie should be listed as a Comedy and not an Action/Adventure movie.
Be that as it may, there are so many good things in the movie:
Hela played by Cate Blanchett is amazing in this movie. From her first appearance n the screen, she exudes regalness, power, and looks amazing in her outfit. She gives no quarter to anyone and is truly one of the best villains that has ever appeared in a Marvel movie.
Idris Elba as Helmdall finally gets more screen time in this movie than the other two Thor movies combined and plays an important part of the movie. Tessa Thompson as a Valkyrie comes in as a powerful force and adds to the movie with her backstory. Mark Ruffalo brings a new version of the Hulk into this and we find out what happened with the Hulk and the Avengers Quin-Jet from the Avengers movie…
Benedict Cumberbatch as Doctor Strange further connects himself to the Marvel Universe.
Jeff Goldblum is sun as The Grandmaster
Director Taika Waititi voices the rock character Korg who befriends Thor and does a fantastic job at it that I hope we see him again in anothe rmovie
The not so good things of the movie:
Dont know why Karl Urban as Scurge The Executioner was in the movie. Could have easily been a part that could have been written out.
If you are a friend of the Warriors Three, then you’ll be disappointed. Hogun, Volstagg, and Fandral (and Zachary Levi must really be happy that he is now SHAZAM!!!) die early deaths, the later two hardly on the screen at all.
Then there is the over reliance on the comedy…
Overall, Thor Raganarok is a good movie and you will enjoy it more than the other Thor movies.
MAKE SURE YOU CATCH:
Stan Lee’s cameo
The Infinity Gauntlet
Chris’ brother, Luke Hemsworth, plays the Thor “actor”.
Matt Damon plays the Loki “actor”.
The two after movie scenes with the first one setting up more Marvel movies and the second one, Jeff Goldblum gets one more shot at having fun… 🙂
