Each week we search high and low across the internet to find the coolest comic book art you won’t see in comics. The reason you won’t see them in comics is because artists often post sketches and commissions on their blogs, Twitters and Tumblr accounts. They are way too great to go unnoticed and we want to be sure everyone gets a chance to check them out. You can also contact some of these artists through their sites and get your own commission.

The first amazing piece comes from Mitch Breitweiser, which he posted on his Tumblr. He will be be at the Dallas Comic Con this weekend and will be selling prints of this Captain America image. Bettie Breitweiser did the gorgeous colors.

If you’re going to the Dallas Con this weekend, be sure to look for Mitch.

Ryan Stegman posted these recent commissions on his Tumblr. Can’t wait to see what he’ll be doing on FANTASTIC FOUR in August. Take a look at his Thanos, Thing and Hellboy.

Now that the CW has announced their full fall schedule, we’re learning more about Arrow, the new series that may do for Green Arrow what Smallville did for Superman – although, it has to be hoped, a little better and without so much pouting. Fancy a new image and a clip from the pilot showing our hero in action? Aim your arrows at the “More” button.

As the officially-released teaser demonstrates, this incarnation of Green Arrow — Sorry, “Arrow” — looks set to be a little more serious than the one that appeared on Smallville, and a little bit more intense about punishing tennis balls that dare to try to bounce away from him:

No wonder he works out in an unused warehouse; you can’t just shoot arrows into the walls of your local 24 Hour Fitness without getting into expensive trouble. I mean, so I’ve heard.

The show will air on Wednesday evenings at 8 p.m. this fall, paired with the long-running Supernatural; we have between now and then to work out just why superhero archers are suddenly becoming so popular in the mainstream. It’s because shooting arrows is cheaper than CGI Hulks, isn’t it? I can understand that.

Each month in the pages of JUSTICE LEAGUE we find out a little more about the team and information from the five year gap between the first arc and the present day in the “New 52.” Jim Lee returns as he and Geoff Johns set things up for upcoming issues.

With a new arc, “The Villain’s Journey,” it’s not the most cheerful of times for the team. There’s a new and deadly villain coming their way. So while we’re finding out more about the team, we’re also witnessing the birth of what could be the end of the team (most likely not, though).

Be sure to read JUSTICE LEAGUE #9 if you haven’t already. There will be some minor spoilers below.

== TEASER ==

The Fate of David Graves

Who is David Graves? Don’t click on his page unless you want even more spoilers revealed.

Graves is the guy first seen in JUSTICE LEAGUE #6, during Darkseid‘s attack. He witnessed the triumph of the team as he was certain he and his family were about to perish. He later wrote a book on the Justice League, Justice League: Gods Among Men. That’s not the only book Graves wrote. It was in issue #3, we saw an excerpt from another of his books, The Secret History of Atlantis. He’s also written several other with revealing titles.

The main thing here though is his present condition. In issue 6 he was fine. But somehow a year later, his condition rapidly took a turn for the worst. We don’t find out how exactly he reached this condition but it’s one that will soon be brought to the Justice League’s attention

Steve Trevor has a Sister

This obviously isn’t a major revelation. As far as I know, Steve never had any siblings. Originally his mother, Diana Trevor, flew and crashed a jet she was test flying onto Paradise Island. During her short time there, she became a hero but was killed, leaving her husband and son behind.

As Steve deals with the press trying to get any information out of him about Wonder Woman or the League, he heads over to his sister’s for a visit. She also has some kids, adding to Trevor’s immediate family. The fact that he has some family will have an effect on the League.

Thomas Wayne’s Letter

Now again, this isn’t exactly a startling revelation but it was great to see what became of the letter Barry Allen was given at the end of FLASHPOINT by Thomas Wayne to deliver to Bruce. There hasn’t been any mention of follow up from that moment. Because that letter exists, Barry and Bruce know that things were not always as they are now. At the very least, they have to be aware of the Flashpoint timeline if not the previous DCU one.

Batman has Arkham under Surveillance

Batman has an invested interest in Arkham Asylum. That’s where all his enemies go. He is constantly having to chase after them when they inevitably break out. There’s always been the theory that enemies like Joker must know all the ins and outs of the place as he seems able to come and go as he pleases.

What we see here is Batman has a map of the place, courtesy of Cyborg, who is plugged into “every computer on Earth.” Having a map may not give him complete access to every single scare inch and secret passageway at the Asylum. Superman notes that “Arkham’s a labyrith. And the lead pipes are obstructing my x-ray vision.”

To add to Batman’s overplanning, he’s also installed motion detectors and secondary cameras in certain areas. Yet, there are still break outs occurring.

The Team is There for Each Other

Something we don’t often see in the members’ solo titles is other heroes helping out when needed. Batman doesn’t call any of the team during the Night of the Owls story but here he gives Superman a call, probably more so because he knows Superman would want to. Flash and Green Lantern are seen together and there is more mention of past team-ups they’ve had. Also when trying to get information from Weapons Master, they have no choice but to call Wonder Woman to get him to talk.

It’s little touches like this that strengthens the bond they’re supposed to have. They’ve been a tight nit group for five years so it makes sense that they work on non-Justice League missions as well.

The Rest

Of course there are other things that happen. As I mentioned, there’s going to be some bad news for the team. You’ll also want to see what happens in the SHAZAM back-up with Billy Batson. There’s big things coming next month in both stories.

Last week saw the final scenes recorded on location for the characters Amy and Rory, aka Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill – the latter who comes ‘full circle’ as the location at St. Cadoc’s Hospital in Caerleon was where he filmed his first day on location back in 2009!

There last scenes to be filmed come from the penultimate episode for the Ponds, the fourth of the next series. Their departure on screen will be in the following episode, the fifth, which was recorded last month. After the final shots were completed Karen Gillan tweeted “And that’s a wrap! Bye bye from the ponds. We love you.”

The final scenes were observed by several of the production team past and present, including lead writer Steven Moffat, and former executive producers Piers Wenger and Beth Willis, with a party taking place afterwards to celebrate.

Another ‘closure’ took place on Friday, with the final day’s production at Upper Boat. The studios, located in Pontypridd just outside Cardiff, have been home to Doctor Who since the third series and have also been the base for Torchwood and The Sarah Jane Adventures. The complex was the first BBC studio centre totally dedicated to drama, and was set up in the wake of the success of Doctor Who following the series revival in 2005. Production will now continue in full at the new purpose-built studios at Roath Lock in Cardiff Bay.

The world may just have gotten its head around the existence of Bronies, but following the successful revival of My Little Pony, the next ironic-gender-appropriation-of-a-nostalgic-toy-brand is already being dreamt up by Hasbro and its television subsidiary, the Hub. Care Bears fans, are you ready for… “Belly-Bros?”

Next month sees the debut of Care Bears: Welcome to Care-a-Lot, a show described in PR sent to Cartoon Brew as “a modernized, CGI-animated version of the classic animated cartoon” that sees “everyone’s favorite bears and their iconic Belly Badges… transformed with today’s technology into a series that kids and families can enjoy together.”

The same PR also describes the show as featuring “the same re-imagined CG animation and spirit of friendship and caring that made shows like “My Little Pony Friendship is Magic a cult hit,” apparently being unable to tell the difference between something that looks like this -

- and something that looks like this:

Yes, the two may both be created using computers, but that’s hardly “the same re-imagined CG animation” in both shows (If you’re wondering what’s happening in the Care Bears image, by the way, Grumpy Bear is unhappy because Tenderheart Bear would rather show off his mad rhyming “skillz” than eat the cereal that Grumpy had made for him).

In case you’re wondering, “Belly-Bros” is a term offered by the Hub as a potential name for the legions of male fans who’ll enjoy this new Care Bears series as much as they do Friendship is Magic. If you’re not feeling it, however, they’re also suggesting “Care-Dudes,” which sounds more like the way that William S. Preston would describe someone who works in an assisted living facility.

Care Bears: Welcome to Care-a-Lot premieres June 2 at 8 a.m. on the Hub. We can only hope that it’ll feature a Care Bear Stare showdown every week.

You might think, after successfully reinventing the superhero movie genre with a series that has just hit a high point with the multiple-record-breaking The Avengers movie, that television networks would be eager for a piece of the Marvel superhero pie. Turns out, you’d be partially wrong: Of the most recent flurry of Marvel properties vying for live action television adaptations, currently only one is showing much strength. But then, we already knew that Hulk is the strongest of them all.

During a conversation with reporters ahead of the official upfront presentation to advertisers, ABC entertainment president Paul Lee revealed that, while the network was still developing a Hulk TV series with Marvel TV and Guillermo Del Toro, the network had passed on a series based on Brian Michael Bendis’ cult favorite detective series Alias. Telling reporters that, despite the latter show stalling, he’d like to “see some Marvel projects come to television,” Lee confirmed that Hulk is still a go, if a somewhat delayed one. “It wasn’t going to be ready this season but we hope it’s going to be ready for next season,” he explained.

AKA Jessica Jones — renamed from Alias to avoid confusion with the ABC series starring Jennifer Garner — had been in the works since December 2010, with Twilight and Dexter veteran Melissa Rosenberg producing and writing the pilot script. Hulk has been in preparation a couple of months longer, with Del Toro and Battlestar Galactica‘s David Eick in place as executive producers. According to Del Toro, despite the character’s prominence in Avengers, the television series would take place in a different continuity – something that may ultimately doom the project if Disney decides to move ahead with a full-scale movie spin-off for the character from the hit Joss Whedon flick.

While ABC is keeping the familial synergy alive (The network, like Marvel, is owned by Walt Disney Co.), Fox seems to be closing the door on its partnership with Marvel TV with the news that its potential Punisher television series – co-created with Criminal Minds‘ Ed Bernero – has also met an untimely end with the network not picking up the pilot. Unlike the promising AKA Jessica Jones, however, this one might be considered a mercy killing; according to sources, the series would have recast Frank Castle as an NYPD cop who went after those who slipped through the fingers of the system by himself after clocking out every night. Somehow, I don’t think that would’ve really appealed to fans of the merciless, messed-up character as written by Greg Rucka, Garth Ennis or Jason Aaron…

To everyone who thought that Before Watchmen was as crass as Warner Bros would get in terms of strip-mining the legacy of Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons’ Watchmen, bless you for your optimism and belief in the inherent goodness of humanity. However, you might want to look away before we tell everyone else about the official Watchmen toaster.

No, it’s not a joke (well, not in that sense, anyway): There really is going to be an official Watchmen toaster that will not only heat bread and bagels to your desired level of tasty, crunchy brownness, but will do so while also imprinting said bread or bagels with iconic artwork from the classic comic – because you demanded it!

To be fair to DC Comics, this actually doesn’t have too much to do with them; it’s part of a line of Warner Bros. television and movie merchandise toasters coming out in September from Dynamic Forces, alongside toasters branded with logos and artwork from The Wizard of Oz, Friends, The Goonies and various other favorites. “Once the timer dings, it’s all fun with your Warner Bros. favorites right in the middle of your morning slice of toast,” according to the official PR from Dynamic Forces. Yes, because if Watchmen‘s Rorschach was anything, it was “all fun.”

There’s really only one response to the existence of this product. Walter?

As you may already be aware, there’s a movie about Batman called The Dark Knight Rises coming out this summer, and as is the case with any big-budget super-hero flick, that means we’re going to get some product tie-ins. Who can forget how Dominos Pizza reflected the complex themes of morality and sacrifice in 2008′s The Dark Knight by offering a pizza with double the pepperoni?! I assure you, my arteries will never forget.

This time around, it’s Mountain Dew, and not only is there a new flavor that’s allegedly inspired by Batman, there’s also a website and, more importantly, an in-store display that looks like the Saddest Batman Ever. Check out more info, and my theories on how this just might tie into the film, after the cut!

The centerpiece of the promotion is undoubtedly the life-sized Batman display that’s sure to be protecting your local gas station from thematic crime:

This is just a computer-generated mock-up of the actual product — which explains why, as CA’s Caleb Goellner put it, “it looks worse than those Taiwanese news cartoons” — but I sincerely hope that the version we actually get in real life looks exactly like this. Batman’s gaunt glumness and unblinking, shell-shocked eyes are pretty much exactly what I think the World’s Greatest Detective would look like if he woke up to find that his legs had been replaced with a barrel of Mountain Dew that he had to wheel around selling to impressionable teens.

The promotion also involves a website that you can go to where you are invited to “Rule the Streets With Dew,” which actually sounds like a pretty pleasant thing to do:

As for the products themselves, they’re rolling out Batman-themed cans, as well as a new flavor called Dark Berry, because apparently “Caped Crusadew” didn’t test well:

Now, this is where things get interesting. The reference to ruling the streets, and the fact that the Mountain Dew campaign seems to be selling itself on providing access to information about the movie itself gives me the idea that maybe, just maybe, this stuff might actually be part of the plot.

After all, Christopher Nolan’s films have nudged a few elements of the Batman mythos to be slightly more realistic. So what if, what if, Bane didn’t get his powers from the super-steroid Venom, but instead was just a big tough dude who was jacked up on Mountain Dew?

If nothing else, it’s something the audience could relate to.

DC Direct Collectibles will expand its line of Batman: Arkham City action figures on September 19, with brand new versions of Azrael, Ra’s al Ghul, the Penguin, two clown thugs (one with a knife, the other with a baseball bat) and Batman himself. As usual, the toys will stand around 6.75″, with the diminutive Penguin keeping in scale at just 5.25″ tall, as seen during NYCC this past fall. Interestingly, the line features the most basic of the Arkham City Batman figures from DCC thus far, following an unmasked version and a “Detective Mode” outfit. Series three is also the first not to feature any female figures (Talia al Ghul and Oracle are possibilities), with Harley Quinn and Catwoman included in previous rollouts. Accessory information is a little light right now, but product images indicate clown thugs will be armed and Ra’s will come equipped with a sword and Azrael probably will too if that scabbard is any indication. You can check out more images of Batman: Arkham City series three action figures after the jump.
