Latest ‘The Amazing Spider-Man’ Movie Stills !!!

Your superhero movie attention span may feel like it’s been taxed to the max by both the Friday opening of The Avengers movie and yesterday’s release of the final trailer for The Dark Knight Rises, but Sony would be remiss not to remind you that July also sees the release of Sony’s The Amazing Spider-Man, right? Apparently so, because the studio has released two more promo images from the film with Peter Parker looking a little worse for the wear.

As if these two new images — showing once again that, with great powers comes great costume upkeep and likelihood of running into trouble with the law — weren’t enough to whet your appetite for the Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone-starring movie, then perhaps the Thursday release of an all-new (and, presumably, final) trailer for the movie might convince you that this will be more watchable than watching what happens when Tobey Maguires gets infected by a jazz-loving monster suit from space.*

[*Editors note: I confess that I love Spidey 3 for exactly that scenario! -- Caleb]

The Amazing Spider-Man is released on July 3.

New ‘Dark Shadows’ Videos ….

Here are eight new clips from Tim Burton’s upcoming film ‘Dark Shadows,’ starring Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter, and Chloe Moretz.  With ‘The Avengers’ mania upon us, do you think people will remember to see this film when it’s released on May 11, 2012?  Like I’ve said before, this looks like one of those movies where I’ll wait for the DVD.  Let us know what you think in the comments section below.

-Synopsis: In the year 1752, Joshua and Naomi Collins, with young son Barnabas, set sail from Liverpool, England to start a new life in America. But even an ocean was not enough to escape the mysterious curse that has plagued their family. Two decades pass and Barnabas (Johnny Depp) has the world at his feet–or at least the town of Collinsport, Maine. The master of Collinwood Manor, Barnabas is rich, powerful and an inveterate playboy…until he makes the grave mistake of breaking the heart of Angelique Bouchard (Eva Green). A witch, in every sense of the word, Angelique dooms him to a fate worse than death: turning him into a vampire, and then burying him alive. Two centuries later, Barnabas is inadvertently freed from his tomb and emerges into the very changed world of 1972. He returns to Collinwood Manor to find that his once-grand estate has fallen into ruin.

The dysfunctional remnants of the Collins family have fared little better, each harboring their own dark secrets. Matriarch Elizabeth Collins Stoddard (Michelle Pfeiffer) has called upon live-in psychiatrist, Dr. Julia Hoffman (Helena Bonham Carter), to help with her family troubles. Also residing in the manor is Elizabeth’s ne’er-do-well brother, Roger Collins, (Jonny Lee Miller); her rebellious teenage daughter Carolyn Stoddard (Chloe Moretz); and Roger’s precocious 10-year-old son, David Collins (Gulliver McGrath). The mystery extends beyond the family, to caretaker Willie Loomis, played by Jackie Earle Haley, and David’s new nanny, Victoria Winters, played by Bella Heathcote.

The Wasp Was Almost a Movie ‘Avenger’ ….

Sure, The Avengers movie — which will be released in the U.S. this Friday after already breaking box office records all over the world this past weekend — may be your most eagerly anticipated movie event of the year, but some fans might be just a little let-down by the absence of one of the team’s founding members in the comics, Janet Van Dyne, AKA the Wasp. Turns out, however, the heroine almost made the cut…

In a piece from the New York Daily News about Marvel’s The Avengers- to give the movie its full, official U.S. title – it was revealed that Van Dyne, one of the two comic book founding Avengers to be missing from the movie alongside Ant-Man, was in an earlier version of the script for the movie, even before Joss Whedon got involved:

There was a version of the script, back when Johansson wasn’t involved, that featured a female superhero named the Wasp. Whedon had to scrap that script, and was making changes to his final version even as the effects people were starting work on the 40-minute battle that closes the movie. “Trying to figure out the way you want to introduce all those characters, that was stuff we were still tweaking in the edit,” says Whedon.

If it was before Scarlett Johansson’s involvement, then this must have been a very early version of the script — potentially one of the first passes from screenwriter Zak Penn, who has said more than once that he took a lot of inspiration for the project from Mark Millar and Bryan Hitch’s The Ultimates — a comic that, of course, featured Janet Van Dyne fairly prominently. Rumors were buzzing that the Wasp might be a part of The Avengers movie a few years back when Desperate Housewives star Eva Longoria was seen leaving Marvel Comics offices. It turns out she was meeting with Marvel regarding “a different movie,” though.

This most recent excising of the Wasp is the latest in a long series of humiliations for the one-time leader of the Avengers, coming after deaths in both the mainstream Marvel and Ultimate universes during event storylines (Secret Invasion and Ultimatum, respectively) and the usurping of her superhero identity by others as a result (Seriously, Hank Pym, taking on the identity of your ex-wife after she dies isn’t a moving tribute, it’s just creepy). With every other Marvel hero seemingly eager to redeem their return ticket from the afterlife (the Human Torch, Thor, the Winter Soldier, Captain America and so on, and so on), would it be too much to hope that at least one Janet Van Dyne lived on in some version of the Marvel universe outside of the animated incarnations? Apparently so — but, on the plus side, maybe the booted movie take on the character will live on in an Avengers sequel or spin-off at some point in the future.

Do We Really Care About This? New Hulk Movie Possible in 2015

The Avengers has yet to open in the U.S. but there’s already a lot of buzz based on the overseas box office. The majority of the comments you’ll see are extremely positive. One question many may have (and I’m keeping my mouth shut until my review is posted later this week) is where does Hulk stand with the team?

We’ve seen two recent releases for the Hulk, with Eric Bana and Ed Norton. In The Avengers, Mark Ruffalo is taking his turn at the character. With all the positive feedback so far, it now appears that Hulk may get a shot at a third solo movie.

In an interview with The Huffington Post (via /Film), Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige was asked a couple weeks ago about giving Hulk “another shot” on the big screen.

Well, no. This was the other shot. Right? I mean, this was the third appearance of Hulk and everything that we had and were going for, we put in to Hulk’s appearance in “Avengers.” So, I love that people are saying that and are feeling that way about Hulk, but mission accomplished at this point. And the way we go forward, we’ll see. But it was a long road to get to this point. … But we’ll be very careful about it and deliberate — as we were in how we wanted to bring him back in “Avengers.”

== TEASER ==

Today in Forbes it seems we may have a different story. Paul Gitter, President of Consumer Products for Marvel said the following:

His sales are up in a major way. We repositioned him from where he was always misunderstood to now depicting him in a more heroic and aspirational manner.

Both comic readers and non-comic readers know who the Hulk is. With the positive comments on Hulk’s performance in The Avengers, it’s likely that audiences do want more Hulk.

There’s been talk of a Hulk TV show on ABC in development. That could cause throw a wrench into the works as audiences might not be willing to take two different versions of Hulk at the same time. Then again, we do have an animated Avengers shows currently airing with a slightly different take on the team.

So the big question is, do people want another Hulk movie? Your answer may change after watching The Avengers. (And if you have watched it, don’t bring up any spoilers!!)

Young Justice “Happy New Year” Season 2 Premier Review ……

“That’s right, Gamma Squad rules!

Do you ever have those moments when you try to put into words just how incredible something is, and whatever you end up saying comes out in a jumbled mess?  Well, this is me trying to describe to you how fantastic the season two premier of Young Justice was.  I’m not trying to say that this series is the greatest ever made, but I do think that it’s the strongest in a long line of excellent Warner Brothers/DC collaborations.  Greg Weisman and his team are doing a marvelous job by giving us action and character development in equal measurements.  I’m trying hard not to “geek-out” right now, but how cool was it to see Batgirl, Wonder Girl, Lobo, and Nightwing all in the same episode?  What’s more interesting are the characters we didn’t see, like Red Arrow, Aqualad, Artimes, and Kid Flash.  Where were they?

Okay, so enough about the high amounts of “fan-service” that this episode shelled out, time to talk about the story.  Just last week during the season one finale, Vandal Savage was in control of the Justice League.  Six of these members were mysteriously absent for several hours, and no one knows what transpired during this time lapse.  Jump five years into the future, and it appears that the entire JL are wanted criminals in several planetary systems.  Whatever they did under Savage’s control, it wasn’t good.  With this five year leap into the future, the Young Justice group we knew has changed dramatically.  Looks like Miss Martian’s relationship with Conner didn’t work out, and it was cool to see Tim Drake as Robin and Dick as Nightwing.  My only problem with this transition is that it seems too sudden.  While I was thrilled to see all of these new characters, I felt like five years was too big a gap between season one and season two.  I hope that the writers give us a deeper backstory on what our favorite heroes have been up to these last five years.

I’m interested in what you thought of all this marvelous madness that transpired in “Happy New Year.”  Being bombarded with new characters can be overwhelming at times, but I found this episode to be highly entertaining.  Were any of you pleased with the new additions to season two, or in the words of Dick Grayson, “were you just whelmed?”  Also, who was your favorite new character?

FAN-tastic Artwork Including Wonder Woman, Batman, Hulk. Iron Man and More !!!

Each week we cruise around the internet and gather up the coolest comic book art that you won’t actually see in comic books. The reason you won’ t see them is because artists often posts sketches and commissions on their blogs, Tumblrs and Twitter accounts. Doing these sketches gives them the opportunity to draw characters they might not normally get the chance to in their normal assignments. Of course they are simply too good to go unnoticed.

Skottie Young has been busy lately. He recently put in some appearances at C2E2 and Boston Comiccon. Check out all these great sketches he posted on his website.

There was a whole lot of Batman going on.

Are you ready to see The Avengers next weekend (if it hasn’t already opened in your country)? Check out this “We have a Hulk” pic Paolo Rivera posted on his blog.

Daniel HDR also posted an Avengers sketch on his Tumblr. Check out his Iron Man.

Robert Atkins has made April ‘Avengers Month’ over at his blog. He’s been posting a bunch of sketches of different Avengers. Take a look at his renditions of Captain America, Spider-Man, Thor, Iron Man and even Scarlet Spider (who wasn’t really an Avenger but it’s always great to see him).

Freddie E. Williams II posted a bunch of sketches on his Twitter he did at C2E2 (how did I not know he was there?!?) and Denver Comicfest.

Agnes Garbowska posted some sketches she did at Boston Comic Con on her Tumblr. Check out her Ravager vs. Wonder Girl and Jason Todd with Tim Drake.

Peter Nguyen posted a couple sketches on his Tumblr. Not sure if they’re from C2E2 or another con. Take a look at Arrowette and Emma Frost.

Dan McDaid updated his blog with a few some sketches of Big Barda, Conan and Doctor Strange.

Gene Gonzales continues to post his ‘Conventionless Convention’ sketches on his blog. Here’s his Goblin Queen and Red Sonja.

Macus To reblogged this nice Batwoman sketch by Marco Rudy.

Michael Walsh put up this cool Spider-Man sketch on his Tumblr.

Dustin Nguyen updated his Tumblr with some old sketches he did. Check out his Wonder Woman, Wolverine and Gambit.

Marcio Takara was also at Boston Comic Con. Take a look at his sketches of Skeltor, Captain America and Black Cat he posted on his Tumblr.

And finally, we know that Carol Danvers is getting a new costume when she becomes Captain Marvel. Cameron Stewart digs the design and posted his take on it on his Tumblr.

That’s it for this week. You have to love convention season when artists post all the sketches they do. Be sure to check back for the next installment of Awesome Art Picks.

Will Fox Out-Marvel Marvel Studios with a ‘First Class’ Sequel, ‘Daredevil’ and ‘Fantastic Four’ Reboots and Potential ‘New Mutants’ Movie?

Marvel Studios isn’t the only movie studio looking to build  some superhero franchises out of Marvel Comics characters, it seems. Not only is  Fox planning to start shooting a sequel to X-Men: First  Class next January, but it’s also planning reboots for Daredevil and Fantastic Four, as well as  mulling over the possibility of a New Mutants movie, too. Will  Marvel soon find itself playing cinematic catch-up to itself?

Talking  to Fox Studios chief Tom Rothman, MTV News reported that Matthew Vaughn will  return as director for a sequel to X-Men: First Class, co-writing the  movie with Jane Goldman and Simon Kinberg. “We’re going to start the beginning  of the year of ’13 for… either Christmas ’13 or summer ’14 [release],” Rothman  explained. Rothman also confirmed that The Twilight Saga: New Moon and Eclipse director David Slade was still on board for a reboot of Daredevil, and said that he’s “hopeful” that Chronicle  director Josh Trank will develop a relaunch of the Fantastic Four  franchise for the studio.

Meanwhile, in a  separate interview with Collider, Rothman teased an announcement “in the  summer” for other properties connected with the X-Men franchise,  telling the site that he “agree with you in your assessment of the potential in  a lot of these characters” after original X-comic spin-off New Mutants  was brought up as a prospective movie idea. The X-Men franchise has already  successfully spun out Wolverine as a solo-star, and although plans for Magneto  and Deadpool movies has seemingly run aground, the sheer number of X-Men and  related characters available suggest that there are many possible movies just  waiting to be made should Fox want to.

Overall, Rothman’s comments  suggest that Fox is looking to hold onto the rights to the various Marvel  characters it has for as long as possible. Maybe we shouldn’t hold our breaths  for an Avengers vs. X-Men movie anytime soon…
