For those concerned about the fate of Iron Man 3 without original director and spiritual guide Jon Favreau, here’s something that’ll make you rest a little easier: He will be involved with next year’s movie… as an actor, at least. And he’s not the only one.
The Hollywood Reporter has news that Favreau will return as “Happy” Hogan in Iron Man 3, reportedly closing a deal to star in the third installment after making cameo appearances in the first two movies. He’ll be joined by Ashley Hamilton, who according to Variety will play 1980s-era armored villain Firepower, with Latino Review reporting that Die Hard 2 veteran William Sadler will also be appearing in the movie in some unknown role.
Already announced for the movie – Marvel’s first post-Avengers project – are Ben Kingsley, Guy Pearce, James Badge Dale and Rebecca Hall, alongside returning stars Robert Downey Jr. and Gwyneth Paltrow. Shooting started on the project this week, with Shane Black replacing Favreau as director and a script written by No Heroics creator Drew Pearce and Black.
In the afterglow of The Avengers movie’s prosperous opening weekend, it’s easy to picture the team in their movieverse attire — especially since it’s inspired by the most recognizable components of their comic book costumes. Not every outfit donned by Earth’s Mightiest heroes fits into that design equation, however… in fact, some of their costumes from over the decades might be outright unrecognizable to casual moviegoers. In the spirit of celebrating some of the team’s endearingly goofiest comic book looks, we had Chris Haley (Let’s Be Friends Again, Captain American Idol) and colorist Daniel Butler cook up this alternate version of The Avengers poster featuring the Hulk’s Mr. Fixit look, Hawkeye’s circus duds, Iron Man’s skirt-enriched oldschool armor, Captain America and Thor’s overtly ’90s costumes, Black Widow’s flashy caped costume and, well… David Hasselhoff as Nick Fury. Celebrate the awesomeness after the cut.
Check out this awesome new TV Spot featuring Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man. The positive buzz surrounding this movie is suffocating, so I’m sure I’ll like what I see when ‘The Avengers’ is released on May 4, 2012. What’s your favorite Marvel movie so far? For me it’s a tie between Thor and the first Iron Man film. Let us know what you think in the comments section below.

Here’s another exciting new TV Spot for ‘The Avengers’ featuring the God of Thunder. Thor has always been one of my favorite characters from the Marvel Universe, and I’m curious to see how he’ll interact with the rest of the team, since he’s from a different world. For those of you fortunate enough to live in Europe, you’ll be able to see the film a full week ahead of the rest of us here in the States, who have to wait until May 4, to catch our first glimpse of ‘The Avengers’ in action. What do you think of the TV Spot?

Aaaand the Joss Whedon/Marvel Entertainment connection continues. Not content with writing the screenplay (based on Stan Lee and Jack Kirby’s comic book work) and directing this summer’s The Avengers movie, now one of his former Vampire Slayers — and one-time Doll — has signed up for duty on an upcoming Marvel animated series. Faith herself, Eliza Dushku, will voice She-Hulk in Disney XD’s upcoming Hulk and The Agents of S.M.A.S.H. cartoon.
The previously-hidden secret of Dushku’s involvement with the show was spilled by guest-star Adrian Pasdar, who’ll be voicing Iron Man during a guest appearance in the series. Seemingly unaware of how bad it sounded, Pasdar revealed that Dushku — who burned her way into the hearts and libidos of fans as the troubled Faith in Buffy The Vampire Slayer before appearing in such series as Angel, Dollhouse and Torchwood– was not only voicing She-Hulk in the series, but also prettied up the recording booth while doing so:
The funny thing is if people were to actually visit these animation rooms and see the guys and the girls that are doing it, with the exception of Eliza, who’s a stunning beauty, the rest of us, we don’t look quite as good as the animation characters they draw for us. It’s really quite funny. You see these middle aged guys having fun, playing these younger whippersnappers. It’s quite amusing to look around the room.
That Eliza Dushku, she sure is purty apparently.
Dushku is no stranger to taking on iconic roles in voice form; last year, she provided the voice for Catwoman in the animated adaptation of Frank Miller’s Batman: Year One, reprising the character in the DC Showcase: Catwoman short that accompanied the movie on DVD.
Neither Disney XD nor Marvel have confirmed the casting news, and Hulk and The Agents of S.M.A.S.H. is still unscheduled by the cable channel at this time.
Last night the filmmakers and stars of The Avengers celebrated their work on the Marvel Studios film with one of those celebrity-strewn red carpet events that we all feel very cynically about but in truth probably wouldn’t if we got to hang out with Robert Downey, Jr. But with the better part of a month before the film finally opens on May 4, Paramount is kicking out more and morevideo clips to keep audiences’ appetites whetted for this most event-crossover-ish of superhero movies. Among them, a scene in which Tony Stark speaks some truth to (super)power and a new TV spot where Thor basically Thors the f**k out. It’s great.
WARNING: All of this constitutes some manner of spoiler.
In the following clip, Tony Stark has a surprisingly subdued conversation with Loki, the evil adopted brother of Avengers member Thor, about why the god of mischief will not succeed in his nefarious plans. It’s hard to say without knowing more, but it seems like Stark, who takes a stiff drink in the presence of the legendary Loki, might be bluffing.
Loki’s brother Thor is my favorite of Marvel’s Cinematic Universe, and the focus of this new television ad in which the hammer-wielding demigod demonstrates that he can drop a cold diss as easily as he can throw a hammer.
Finally, a perfectly Whedonesque Black Widow clip that went around last week that we totally missed. Sorz.
The Avengers is much anticipated by superhero comics fans as well as the wide audience that the charming Marvel Studios productions have cultivated. However, some industry professionals like Golem’s Mighty Swing cartoonist James Sturm have called for a boycott in protest of Marvel and its parent company Disney’s treatment of the late Jack Kirby — the legendary cartoonist who created many of the Avengers characters (and a great deal of others owned by the company) and his heirs, who recently lost a court battle to reclaim rights to the characters.
Directed by Joss Whedon, The Avengers is a first for nerd cinema in that it assembles the main players from a series of several Marvel films that began with 2008′s Iron Man and continued with The Incredible Hulk, Iron Man 2, Thor and Captain America: The First Avenger. Known as the Marvel Cinematic Universe, all of these films were mostly pretty good to even great, performed very well in their own rights, and served collectively as a prelude to The Avengers. The film opens May 4.
In his movie career, Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man has faced off against terrorists, corrupt businessmen and, come this summer, an Asgardian deity and his accompanying maybe-aliens. But is any of that likely to prepare him for the ultimate foe just announced for next year’s Iron Man 3 — Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi?!? No, wait, just the actor who portrayed him, Ben Kingsley.
Ben Kingsley, who made his name playing the well-respected civil disobedience leader Ghandi in Richard Attenborough’s Oscar-winning 1982 biographical movie of the same name, is in talks to sign onto the third Iron Man movie as its main villain, according to reports that surfaced yesterday. Those same reports suggested that Kingsley will assume the role of the Mandarin, the long-standing Iron Man villain whose existence has been long-hinted at in earlier movies, while also suggesting that the plot of the third movie — The first to be directed by someone other than Jon Favreau, with Shane Black stepping into the folding chair — may take its cue from Warren Ellis’ 2005 comic book reimagining of the character, “Extremis.” Variety has since reported that Kingsley won’t be playing the Mandarin, so the question of his movie role remains.
Interestingly enough, this casting may suggest that the Iron Man series will last past the three movies many had considered would constitute its run; Kingsley’s involvement in the movie is being played down somewhat with his character being described as “not the primary villain” (so probably not Mallen) of the movie, suggesting that there will be at least one more installment for the character to take center stage at some point — Unless, of course, his character will go on to tangle with all of the Avengers in a future sequel to that movie at some point.
Marvel hasn’t commented on the casting rumors as yet. Iron Man 3 is scheduled to start production later this year for a release in May 2013.
March comes in like a lion and out like…a dire wolf? April means we finally get a new season of HBO’s Game of Thrones, with the next chapter in the war for the Iron Throne. While the rest of us have been waiting out the long winter, fan artists have been busy illustrating this clash of kings, but not with the Starks and Lannisters you might expect. Instead, we have some very different, but still familiar faces stepping into the fray. From Dothraki ponies and Muppets of Winterfell to A Game of Community to Lord Tony Stark, I’ve collected some silly, strange and downright wonderful fan art, mashing up all sorts of comics and TV shows with characters from George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire.
The Muppets really are the chameleons of the mashup world (although I don’t recall any actual chameleon characters among the felt thespians). They’ve been Firefly characters, traveled through time aboard the TARDIS, starred in The Wicker Man and played at Thor. But Yehudi Mercado has found the perfect murder-and-incest vehicle for the Muppet Players. He’s even finally found a use for Pepe the King Prawn. Just remember, Pepe, the dragon is a silent role.
I’m glad I’m not the only one who reads A Song of Ice and Fire and gets distracted with thoughts of Tony Stark in Winterfell. Of course, why sit on an iron throne when you can sit on one made of gold-titanium alloy?
Michael Dialynas opted to add a dash of Princess Bride to his Iron Man/Game of Thrones mashup. Does that mean Joffrey should have six fingers on one hand? That’s what inbreeding gets you.
Is it wrong that I would totally watch this show? I just worry that I’d get overly attached to Lady. This is just one of College Humor’s “If Adult TV Shows Were Remade for Children.”
Why do the Dothraki always travel with horses? Because they’re secretly bronies. Megan Fergusonproves they’re just hungry, merciless bronies.
I’m sure that there are a lot of parallels between Sons of Anarchy and Game of Thrones, but all I can think about is that Queen Cersei as an unnatural interest in her brother, and that queen bee Gemma Teller Morrow is loosely based on Hamlet’s mom. Ick. And yes, this does come in a t-shirt.
Community‘s Shirley would end the War of Five Kings with baked goods and shame. Of course, it would be all for naught when Annie comes across the Narrow Sea fueled by nothing but amphetamines and a determination to be the best little conqueror in Westeros. By Brian Valeria, who also came up with this brilliant Starburns/Hound mashup:
Oh, Starburns, you’re more than a haircut now. You’re a really awesome scar.
Obviously, there are no White Walkers. On the other side of the wall, there’s just a young boy and his imaginary tiger punking the entire Night’s Watch. From Joel Watson of HijiNKS Ensue.
I have my doubts about a Clone Trooper resting his posterior on the Iron Throne (even if they do have considerably better aim than Stormtroopers do), but at least this guy’s throne is made from blasters instead of swords. It even comes with a punny name: Game of Clones.
Well, every is talking about Daenerys and her sex life. They’re just less interested in whether she can be branded a slut than in whether she will give birth to a child who can lay legitimate claim to the Iron Throne. This is the cover of Grant Gould’s latest sketchbook.
This College Humor comic reveals what happens when mail-delivering birds get their magical wires crossed. This is why you use homing pigeons, even if they’re less sexy than ravens and owls.
When you play the Game of Throneopoly, you win or you keep playing until three in the morning. Death is too easy, and it doesn’t build any hotels on King’s Landing. From io9.
Here at ComicsAlliance, we know that there is only one choice for the ruler of the Iron Throne” Magneto. After all, if someone usurps the throne, he can just magnetically pull it back to himself. It may be a symbolic act, but it’s a pretty powerful one. Read Let’s Be Friends Again creators Curt Franklin and Chris Haley’s entire pitch for X-Game of Thrones, starring Professor X as Ned Stark, Cyclops as Jon Snow, Emma Frost as Cersei Lannister, Nightcrawler as Tyrion Lannister and Jean Grey as Daenerys Targaryen (Mother of Phoenixes, rather than Mother of Dragons).
Jon Snow and Ghost get an Adventure Time makeover thanks to Estebee. Now, now, Jon. Finn would never look sad about fending off the White Walkers.
Estebee also gave Peter Baelish and Sansa Stark the Adventure Time treatment. The fact that Littlefinger retained his nose signals to me that he’s some sort of evil wizard. A wizard of lies.
Finally, Estebee mashes up the Red Priestess with Adventure Time‘s Marceline.
The Simpsons has paid homage to Game of Thrones not once but twice. First was a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it flash in the episode “The Ten Percent Solution,” in which HBO apparently ruined the books by given each character his or her own Iron Throne. The second was in the now-famous couch gag done entirely in the style of Game of Thrones‘ opening credits:
I can’t believe we’re less than six weeks away from the premier of ‘The Avengers.’ I’m looking forward to seeing how Thor will interact with the rest of the group, since he’s the only one who’s not from earth. Which Avenger are you most looking forward to seeing on the big screen? ’The Avengers’ will be released on May 4, 2012.

Check out these new photos from Marvel Studios’ ‘The Avengers,’ which will premier in theaters on May 4, 2012. How can a movie with this many awesome superheroes be bad? Well, it could, but with director Joss Whedon at the helm, I have a feeling that we’re going to see something special. What do you think?
