What Could Have Been … ‘The Avengers’ Movie Poster Remix: The Goofiest Costumes

In the afterglow of The Avengers movie’s prosperous opening weekend, it’s easy to picture the team in their movieverse attire — especially since it’s inspired by the most recognizable components of their comic book costumes. Not every outfit donned by Earth’s Mightiest heroes fits into that design equation, however… in fact, some of their costumes from over the decades might be outright unrecognizable to casual moviegoers. In the spirit of celebrating some of the team’s endearingly goofiest comic book looks, we had Chris Haley (Let’s Be Friends Again, Captain American Idol) and colorist Daniel Butler cook up this alternate version of The Avengers poster featuring the Hulk’s Mr. Fixit look, Hawkeye’s circus duds, Iron Man’s skirt-enriched oldschool armor, Captain America and Thor’s overtly ’90s costumes, Black Widow’s flashy caped costume and, well… David Hasselhoff as Nick Fury. Celebrate the awesomeness after the cut.

Thor Featured In This New International TV Spot For ‘The Avengers’ !!!

Here’s another exciting new TV Spot for ‘The Avengers’ featuring the God of Thunder.  Thor has always been one of my favorite characters from the Marvel Universe, and I’m curious to see how he’ll interact with the rest of the team, since he’s from a different world.  For those of you fortunate enough to live in Europe, you’ll be able to see the film a full week ahead of the rest of us here in the States, who have to wait until May 4, to catch our first glimpse of ‘The Avengers’ in action.  What do you think of the TV Spot?

-Synopsis: Marvel Studios presents in association with Paramount Pictures “Marvel’s The Avengers”–the Super Hero team up of a lifetime, featuring iconic Marvel Super Heroes Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk, Thor, Captain America, Hawkeye and Black Widow. When an unexpected enemy emerges that threatens global safety and security, Nick Fury, Director of the international peacekeeping agency known as S.H.I.E.L.D., finds himself in need of a team to pull the world back from the brink of disaster. Spanning the globe, a daring recruitment effort begins.

Starring Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner and Samuel L. Jackson, and directed by Joss Whedon, “Marvel’s The Avengers” is based on the ever-popular Marvel comic book series “The Avengers,” first published in 1963 and a comics institution ever since. Prepare yourself for an exciting event movie, packed with action and spectacular special effects, when “Marvel’s The Avengers” assemble in summer 2012. In “Marvel’s The Avengers,” superheroes team up to pull the world back from the brink of disaster when an unexpected enemy threatens global security.

Tony Stark and Thor Talk Smack in New ‘Avengers’ Clips !!!

Last night the filmmakers and stars of The Avengers celebrated their work on the Marvel Studios film with one of those celebrity-strewn red carpet events that we all feel very cynically about but in truth probably wouldn’t if we got to hang out with Robert Downey, Jr. But with the better part of a month before the film finally opens on May 4, Paramount is kicking out more and more video clips to keep audiences’ appetites whetted for this most event-crossover-ish of superhero movies. Among them, a scene in which Tony Stark speaks some truth to (super)power and a new TV spot where Thor basically Thors the f**k out. It’s great.

WARNING: All of this constitutes some manner of spoiler.

In the following clip, Tony Stark has a surprisingly subdued conversation with Loki, the evil adopted brother of Avengers member Thor, about why the god of mischief will not succeed in his nefarious plans. It’s hard to say without knowing more, but it seems like Stark, who takes a stiff drink in the presence of the legendary Loki, might be bluffing.

Loki’s brother Thor is my favorite of Marvel’s Cinematic Universe, and the focus of this new television ad in which the hammer-wielding demigod demonstrates that he can drop a cold diss as easily as he can throw a hammer.

Finally, a perfectly Whedonesque Black Widow clip that went around last week that we totally missed. Sorz.

The Avengers is much anticipated by superhero comics fans as well as the wide audience that the charming Marvel Studios productions have cultivated. However, some industry professionals like Golem’s Mighty Swing cartoonist James Sturm have called for a boycott in protest of Marvel and its parent company Disney’s treatment of the late Jack Kirby — the legendary cartoonist who created many of the Avengers characters (and a great deal of others owned by the company) and his heirs, who recently lost a court battle to reclaim rights to the characters.

Directed by Joss Whedon, The Avengers is a first for nerd cinema in that it assembles the main players from a series of several Marvel films that began with 2008′s Iron Man and continued with The Incredible Hulk, Iron Man 2, Thor and Captain America: The First Avenger. Known as the Marvel Cinematic Universe, all of these films were mostly pretty good to even great, performed very well in their own rights, and served collectively as a prelude to The Avengers. The film opens May 4.

Halloween Comes Early With New ‘Avengers’ and ‘Amazing Spider-Man’ Movie Costume Images

It may feel a little early to start thinking about Halloween, but considering the recent release of new footage from The Avengers and The Amazing Spider-Man movies, the timing of Costume Craze’s recent blog posts revealing the film’s licensed costumes should suit fans just fine. The Avengers line consists of updated costumes for characters that got previous costumes based on The Incredible Hulk, Iron Man 2, Thor, and Captain America: The First Avenger, joined by first timers at the licensed costume corral, Hawkeye and Nick Fury. Spidey’s Amazing suit is also brand new, and sports its signature texture, plus mechanical web-shooters (but no silver slippers). The costumes and accessories aren’t available for pre-order just yet, so there’s no pricing info. If you’ve shelled out for a licensed superhero costume before, though, I imagine you’ve got an idea of how much to budget come October. See what you think of the upcoming Avengers and Amazing Spider-Man movie Halloween costumes after the cut.

Was Loki’s Army Revealed in “The Avenger’s” #SuperBowl TV Ad???

We’ve finally been given a look at Loki’s forces in the new, extended trailer for The Avengers, as premiered online just after a cut-down version graced the Superbowl.

Here are four screen grabs from the single shot in which they appear with any degree of clarity:

So it’s not the Skrull or the Kree – despite the silhouette almost matching, that’s down to their funky headwear.

These figures do look quite a bit like the Frost Giants as seen in Thor

…but not exactly.

I don’t think these strange invaders are complete strangers, however. Or, at least, I reckon we’ve seen a scene with lots of similarities.

Here are some pages from Thor, during Walt Simonson’s run, the famous Surtur Saga storyline — which at one point brings in both the Fantastic Four and The Avengers in an attempt to help save the day against attack by an overwhelming force in New York.

What you see here are the sons of Muspell, creatures from Muspellheim, dropping into the streets of Manhattan to wreak havok. In both Norse myth and Simonson’s comics, this storyline also involves the breaking of the Bifröst bridge, but as some of that has been played out in last year’s Thor, Joss Whedon’s script for The Avengers probably won’t be going beat-for-beat with what we’ve already read in the comics.

In Simonson’s storyline, the sons of Muspell come to New York via a portal near the top of the Empire State Building. Here’s a page:

This too is echoed in these scenes from The Avengers. In that first trailer screencap at the top of this post, note a glimpse of some sort of large arch structure with the warriors dropping down from it (Or out of it. Edited to add — looking even more closely at that top image, the shadowed part of the arch seems to be actually composed of the figures emerging from it. That would match the concept of the comic page here almost exactly), and also note the Chrysler building here:

Some sort of energy burst around the spire of the building here, as per the comics. The edit makes it seem that Thor causes the lightning, but we don’t know if that’s really the case – and even if it is, there’s no reason to discount the association.  Re-watch the trailer after you’ve taken a good look at these pages.  Panic in the streets with warriors dropping down or out of an arched mass or structure, the focus on the building top, and the general look of the creatures… it’s all a pretty decent look-and-feel fit with the visual of the comic storyline, even if the details are remixed to fit the film.

So, Loki’s army would seem to be something like the sons of Muspell, from somewhere like Muspellheim. The names might change – that won’t be important – but if I were a betting man, I’d say that they won’t. I’d say the original Norse handles are going to hang around.

There’s a long history of comic book movies taking bits and pieces of imagery and plot mechanics from here and there in the strips that inspired them. I’m sure that Whedon has done just the same. And I’m also pretty sure he’ll have put them altogether into something fresh and cogent…

But to know about that for sure, there’s still a little waiting to get through. The Avengers reaches US screens on May 4th, and UK screens a week early on April 27th.
