The Return of PETER CANNON: THUNDERBOLT

Back in June, Dynamite Entertainment announced the return of Peter Cannon, the world-famous author, international celebrity and superhero known as Thunderbolt. Created by the late Pete Morisi, the character makes his return to comics courtesy of Dynamite Entertainment. The new series, PETER CANNON: THUNDERBOLT will be written by Steve Darnall and Alex Ross with art by Jonathan Lau. The series will also feature covers by Alex Ross, Jae Lee, John Cassaday and Ardian Syaf.

The series goes on sale this September. In case you’re not exactly sure who Peter Cannon is or what to expect from this series, we asked Steve and Alex a few questions to prepare for the new title.

Comic Vine: hat will be the feel for this series? Will fans familiar with the character immediately recognize everything?

Steve Darnall: I guess it depends what you mean by “feel.” I will say that none of us were interested in discarding the work Pete Morisi put into creating this character back in the 1960s—and while we weren’t about to pretend it was still 1967, I can’t guarantee fans will “immediately recognize everything,” I don’t think it should be too much of a challenge to ask them to step into Peter Cannon’s world.

Alex Ross: I’m not sure how many people that represents. This is the same character who shares the same history, and even the costume design I’ve done is essentially a look he’s moved into, not eradicating what he wore before.

CV: What do new fans need to know in order to jump in?

SD: Start with the first issue.

Seriously, one of the strengths of a character like Thunderbolt is that he doesn’t come with a lot of baggage, so to speak. We can draw upon the characterizations Pete Morisi created in his stories and hopefully expand upon them. In any case, it’s my sincere hope that anyone—whether they’re familiar with this character or not—will be able to get up to speed pretty quickly. I don’t think we’ve assumed that everyone.

AR: Thunderbolt is a hero who has been around before our story begins, but is now living with the repercussions of having truly shaped and changed the world.

CV: Will this series begin from the beginning of his origin or will it be loosely tied to past continuity? (Can we assume there will be no connection to the DC Comics series from the 90s?)

AR: We’re not rebooting it in quite the same way that the DC Comics series did. Past readers can assume that his general history is the same, as we will recap his origin immediately.

SD: We don’t begin issue 1 with his birth, if that’s what you’re asking. In fact, our story begins where a lot of other stories end: with our hero saving the world. From there, we’ll delve into the character’s past and of course, take him into his future. I think we were more interested in staying true to the characters than in toeing the line based on some notion of “continuity.” For instance, the Mike Collins-Jose Marzan Thunderbolt series of the 1990s to which you refer made a concerted effort to incorporate Peter Cannon into the DC Universe. We didn’t have that option here, so we just tried to draw a little from the work of those before us and add a few ideas of our own to make a little universe in which Pete Morisi’s character could exist.

CV: Where did the Pete Morisi “never before published” origin story come from? How come it was never published?

SD: It’s my understanding that Pete Morisi wrote and drew a special story in the 1980s for a book called SECRET ORIGINS. As for why it was never published… that’s probably a better question for the editor or publisher of that book.

CV: Will the series take place in the current age or have a retro feel?

SD: Long, long ago, in a galaxy…oh, wait! Seriously, this story takes place in a time similar to our own, with the same conveniences and some of the same nuisances.

AR: The series is set as if everything is completely contemporary.

CV: Will other characters and villains such as the Hooded One be part of this series?

SD: Yes, during the course of this series, we will feature some characters that Pete Morisi and his cohorts created and some that we created.

CV: What’s the one thing that sets Peter Cannon apart from other heroes?

AR: Partially his reluctance to be the hero he was trained to be is somewhat uniquely conveyed in his behavior. And his main ability is a force of will over all odds to fight against the limitations of his own frail body.

SD: Well, to start with, there’s his costume, which is a “coat of many colors,” as it were. There’s also something about the character’s attitude which always struck me as unique, in that he had this particular life sort of thrust upon him and didn’t really have a say in the matter. He was given a great honor when he was allowed to study the ancient scrolls that would unlike the secrets of mind and body, but it wasn’t something he necessarily wanted. I mean, even Bruce Wayne got to decide whether or not he wanted to be Batman. What’s more, Thunderbolt was created to protect a society and a world for which he doesn’t have much respect. He’s in charge of saving a world he doesn’t necessarily think is worth saving—to him, we live in a loud, violent world, filled with stupid and meaningless distractions; worse than that, we do it willingly. And yet, when he’s needed, he calls upon everything he has and does what he can.

PETER CANNON: THUNDERBOLT is on sale in September.

Christopher Nolan’s Advice to Next BATMAN Director…..

It’s inevitable, Warner Bros. is going to reboot the Batman franchise again without director Christopher Nolan. They plan on it, and I imagine we’ll see a new Batman film within the next three years. It will be interesting to see who the studio brings in to direct the next movie. It’s going to be really hard to do better than what Nolan has done, but the director does offer up some advice to the next Batman director, whoever it will be.

During a conversation on Empire‘s podcast, Nolan said,

The only advice I would have is that … when I first met with Paul Levitz of DC Comics prior to Batman Begins, he explained to me clearly that Batman, of all superheroes, has thrived on reinterpretation and almost is strengthened by it. And I’m talking about over the years in the comic books but also in the movies. So when the time is right, whenever someone does whatever the next iteration of the character is, they simply need to be true to whatever it is they want to see, to what they believe in, not worry too much about what everyone else is telling them it should be.

That’s some solid advice, but it doesn’t mean that that person’s true vision of the character is going to be good. Basically it’s up to the studio to find a filmmaker that has an incredible vision worth sharing with the world. It’s really hard for me to imagine a better Batman film than what Nolan has created. I know there are ways to do it, I know there is the potential to be a better Batman film, the question is who will be the one to actually make it happen. Chances are we’re going to see a few more mediocre Batman films until we get another really good one.

What are your thoughts on rebooting the Batman franchise? What directors would you like to see take a shot at it?

Batman Brings In $160 Million Its Opening Weekend !!!

Coming in third place for biggest opening weekend of all time with $160,887,295 is Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises. The film was behind Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows Part 2 by a mere $9 million, but far behind Marvel’s The Avengers which holds the top slot for biggest opening weekend of all time. Still, third place isn’t half bad; particularly considering the negative press loosely surrounding the film’s release. In fact, many critics speculated that the film would have fared better its opening weekend — $38 million more, to be exact — which would have but it on the heels of The Avengers with $198 million.

However, its hard to look at these opening weekend box office numbers and not take into account the horrific Aurora, Colorado theater shooting during the midnight release of the film when a masked man entered the midnight showing at the theater, dropped two smoke bombs into the crowd, and began an armed assault on the innocent moviegoers. The terrible and incredibly sad incident 12 dead, several wounded and far too many families of innocent civilians in turmoil. As a result of these incidents, Warner Brothers canceled the Paris red carpet screening of The Dark Knight Rises, interviews with the director and the film’s cast, and pulled commercials promoting the film over the weekend. Needless to say, the shootings left a bad taste in the the mouths of fans and potential moviegoers, and there’s a good chance that many didn’t make it to the theater over the weekend as a result.

We should probably also take into account the fact that — unlike The AvengersThe Dark Knight Rises wasn’t shown in 3D, something which would affect the ticket sales as 3D showings tend to be slightly more expensive. Either way, the film did spectacularly its opening night bringing in $30 million and is a fitting end to an era of Christopher Nolan’s Batman. Be sure to check out Comic Vine’s official review of the film here as well as two in depth discussions here and here, breaking down the film’s plot points, characterizations and much more. What did you think of The Dark Knight Rises?

20 Years Of ‘Mighty Morphin Power Rangers’ with Bulk and Skull

San Diego Comic-Con comes but once a year, but when it does it brings  good cheer I usually do my best to track down anyone I can who is  involved with the Power Rangers. What can I say? Tokusatsu, original or  localized, is just my jam like that. That’s why when Shout Factory! notified me  that Mighty Morphin Power Rangers stars Paul Schrier and Jason  Narvy (a.k.a. Bulk and Skull) would be on hand to discuss the 20th  anniversary of the American version of the Super Sentai series and its  corresponding MMPR: The Complete Series DVD box set, I cleared my  schedule to meet up with the duo.

My conversation with the pair yielded a lot of  fun info about their experiences working on various Power Rangers series over the years and will give their fans some insights into what  they’ve both got cooking these days. Both men are still acting, among other  creative endeavors, with Schrier appearing in the recently wrapped Power  Rangers Super Samurai and Narvy now a Ph.D teaching theater at Concordia  University, Chicago and performing around the country. I didn’t manage to  uncover any details about the upcoming Power Rangers Megaforce series,  but I did get to meet MMPR’s Black Ranger, Walter Jones in the middle of the  interview. It was serendipitous, man.
You can watch the full  conversation below, just don’t blame me if Bulk and Skull’s theme music is stuck in your head the rest  of the day.

Note: Video contains mildly NSFW  language toward the end

The Unbelievable Batman’s Villain Chart !!!

Check out this chart that groups all of Gotham City’s villains by type. I knew Batman had a ton of villains to fight off, but this really puts everything into perspective. Batman was going up against an insane amount of evil! It’s crazy that none of these villains have been able to snuff him out. Remember, this is a guy that doesn’t have superpowers! It just proves to me that Batman is seriously the greatest comic book badass ever. Just look at what he’s up against, and the fact that he hasn’t been killed off is incredible.

One could also agrue that the villains he goes up against are pathetic. Click on the image to enlarge, and let us know who your favorite Batman villain is!

FAN-tastic Cosplay Including: Ame-Comi Batman, The Dirty Pair, Miss Martian, Scarlet Spider and MORE !!!

You’ve Seen ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ – Now What’s Next?

It sounds like pretty much everyone loved The Dark Knight Rises. As the final act in Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy, it had a definitive ending and many felt it was what the franchise deserved. But obviously this isn’t the actual end of the franchise. Batman will rise once again. The question is, what happens after this film?

The story is over and Nolan has stated he is finished with the franchise. Here’s some quick thoughts where the franchise could go.

There will be spoilers so hopefully you’ve done your duty as a Bat-fan and have already seen it at least once.

Catwoman Spin-off

Many felt Anne Hathaway was a poor choice to be cast as Catwoman (or we should say Selina Kyle). Her performance and the way Selina was written worked better than everyone expected. She carried herself perfectly and showed she was more than capable of kicking ass alongside Batman.

Christopher Nolan was impressed with Hathaway’s performance and mentioned the following to Access Hollywood.

Anne is incredibly precise and articulate about the psychology of the character. She’s really built it from the ground up, it’s just a delight to watch her perform. [Selina's] She’s an incredible character and we’re very excited to see her and hopefully we’ll leave people wanting more.

What are the chances of this? Not too likely it seems.

Hathaway did tell Digital Spy that should would love to do one if Nolan was involved. Since Nolan said he’s finished with Batman, his involvement wouldn’t be likely. Also, do people still have a bad taste in their mouths from the last Catwoman movie?

John Blake/Batman/Robin Spin-off

Joseph Gordon Levitt was one of my favorite parts of the movie. He provided the inspiration that Bruce needed to bring himself back to his destiny. With his knowledge of Batman’s identity, the name Robin thrown about and the way the movie ended, Blake draws some inspiration from Tim Drake. A movie could pick up after the events of this movie featuring his continuation over the protection of Gotham City.

One of the points that was odd was the fact that in those eight years that Batman was in retirement, no other major villain stepped up to try to claim Gotham for themselves. Despite Batman’s sacrifice, you would think someone would try to claim the city believing that he was, in fact, dead.

Would this work? Again, without Nolan, it’d be hard to accept. Blake was a great character but the thought of someone else stepping into this version of Gotham to direct would be difficult.

Start All Over Again

Unfortunately it seems that rebooting the franchise is the only thing to do. I’ve mentioned several times that I would like comic book movies to take the James Bond route and simply recast the character rather than restart and retell the origin.

More likely the next time we’ll see Batman on the big screen is if and when the Justice League live-action movie is released. Even though this last film showed that Batman could partner with others (Blake and Kyle), having other costumed superheroes just wouldn’t work. We’ll have to see a new and different Batman, in a different movie universe, to see him interact with Superman, Wonder Woman and others.

This seems the most likely and most obvious but it’s for the best. Trying to return to the world Nolan created without his involvement could end up tarnishing the other movies. Plus a Batman movie without Bruce Wayne would be weird, even if it came out totally cool.

What do you think could work or would be best for the Batman franchise?

Tony Guerrero is the Editor-in-Chief of Comic Vine. You can follow him on Twitter @GManFromHeck. He’s not a huge fan of seeing comic book origins retold ever ten years in movies.

Anne Hathaway Talks about a Possible CATWOMAN Spin-Off !!!

Last week, Christopher Nolan mentioned in an interview that he’d like to see Anne Hathaway‘s Catwoman get a spin off film. The director says he’s moving on, but that she deserves it. When the actress was asked about a spin off film in a recent interview say said,

If [Nolan] is interested then I’m very interested. I think it would be lovely to see more of her but only if it’s with the right people. She lives in this Gotham City and so it would have to be established by the people who have made this Gotham City. For me, at least.

So basically it’s not going to happen, and we shouldn’t get our hopes up. Nolan is done with this universe, and she’s obviously not going to do it without him.

I loved Hathaway’s portrayal of Catwoman in The Dark Knight Rises, but with the way the movie ended, I’m fine with not seeing any spin-off movies. We know Warner Bros. is planning to reboot the franchise again at some point, we just don’t know how they plan on doing that. Would you like to see a Catwoman spin-off film? I’m sure the studio will eventually give it another try, but it will most likely be without Nolan and Hathaway.
